Recently, MIT announced the launch of an interdisciplinary, faculty-led study of the future of solar energy. The study will focus on four key solar technologies: photovoltaics, solar heating and cooling, solar thermal power, and production of fuels from the sun — the prize here is practical splitting of water into oxygen and hydrogen. The applications will include both on and off grid configurations and well as central and distributed systems.
The hallmark of the study is an assessment that integrates technical, economic, and community/market factors that will determine the pace of solar penetration in world energy markets during the years ahead.
This study aims to present a comprehensive assessment of solar energy’s potential for securing the energy future of the United States, other countries with developed economies, large emerging economies such as China and India, and poor countries located in Africa and the Caribbean.
Why is MIT doing this? Two reasons: First, eventually the world will need to use sunlight — a plentiful and non-polluting source of energy — to meet our needs. The problems are urgent and it is not too soon to begin — so the technical community must think smart, think fast, and think big. The MIT study team will point to some exciting new ideas: nano-structured materials for capture sunlight and for energy storage; new catalysts to crack water, devices to focus sunlight; solar driven thermoelectric conversion. But, we don’t have all the technical ideas. Put your favorites on this blog.

MIT was always a way off dream for me and anything they do should be broken down into increments starting out in interactive playland for k and escalating thru 12th grade because it used to be that the ozone kept us out of the sun, and now vitamin D wants us getting back in it.
We are only talking about a period of about 10 years, and basically the information highway is fully loaded except oxyhydro mainstreet needs a breath of fresh air in knowing why they should support solarization photovoltaics across the nation in the art of a profited investment in their own education.
People of all races, colors and creeds all keep wanting to go backwards in a guilt trip, and since I was also accorded the discrepancy department and wasn't there way back when, nor a promoter of past ill gotten discrepancies, it's a little tiring hearing this un-necessary plagiarism of the same exact childish way of getting attention from the parents when the real truth is that illiteracy is the causation of not being interested in anything except the axis of their own center of attention.
Is that thought a little brutish in the compassion department? Possibly, however, it is a reality if you've ever actually been anywhere and tried to strike up a conversation with oxyhydro mainstreet who always complain that they want to be on the wall street A-list.
The hopefullness I hope for MIT is that they utilize moonlit development of 'round the world productions because although the sun has always been very good to me in the quick tan solution, I'm not getting any younger for a bounce to the moon and back and when that happens, the real actuality will get everyones attention of not wanting to get left behind even if it's only a quick trip of what about me.

Passive solar heating and cooling (and insulation) using architecture to its best advantage is one component that complements the active approaches, and it can be done immediately in a cost effective manner. The replacement of oil will require a variety of innovations in combination. Passive will allow homes to use less of the active. Both www.solardecathlon.org/ and LEED certification are positive steps, utilizing a variety of solar technologies. Al Gore's proposal of getting all electricity from sustainable resources in ten years is a most intelligent goal. It is intelligent because we will basically be out of oil in about 40-50 years.

Perhaps the real reason these technologies aren't more prevasive is that companies whose vested interest in a previous technology are allowed to purchase and control such technological innovations. Such contol effectively makes them economically unviable. It really seems, to me, to be both a conflict of interest and a monopolistic control. Even though the industries are dissimilar, it is like an economy of scale making other technolgies ineffective. Sort of like an efficent distrubution system, like Walmart, destroying less effective options: like small business and individual markets. It is sad when economics overcomes optimism, isn't it?
